💬 Comments on Google Sites 🌐

If you have used #GoogleSites, you have learned that it is difficult to add a comments section to your site. You may want to try using #GoogleForms and #GoogleSheets to add to your website. The only problems is that comments do not show up right away. Refresh is required to see submitted and recent comments.

Bonus: Google Sites address is long. Use goo.gl to shorten your Site address.

Ms. Garza, my wife, was talking to a parent. The conversation was in Spanish, and there was a portion I distinctly remember. It roughly translates to:

"In math; if want solutions, you have to do the work. Otherwise, all you have are problems."

#Math and Life have something in common.

💻 The Hour of Code 🕘

The #HourOfCode has arrived.

If you decide to take it beyond an hour, there is a great Google program called #CSFirst that targets #programming for Elementary and Middle School students. Even in High School, it is a great resource to get started. Plus, the club passes given to you free are great quality looking.

Try an Hour of Code http://goo.gl/A4vJvX with CS-First

🎵 Google Music 🎵

I have tried different music services and only one actually worked for me... #Songza ! Great, curated, free, music service that is ad free compared to Pandora. Then, Google buys Songza. I adopted the early #GoogleMusic, but lost my way. The new #GooglePlay Music brought me back to Google. It's always nice to have some nice music in the classroom.

I went to college because I was not smart

Would you go to a hospital if you were healthy?

College is not for all. Example: Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs. However, these people are smart... and programmers, but that's besides the point. For the rest of us, there's higher education.

I went to college because I was not smart. There's a lot that I need to learn. I need to continue my education.

Just like you go the Doctor (MD) to get healthy, you go to college to get smart.

Waiting for #GoogleExpeditions ? It'll be a while, but here is an alternative. With #GoogleCardboard you can experience #VirtualFieldTrips using the #StreetView and #YouTube apps. The Cardboard device I use is http://goo.gl/dds3Wf and my phone. If you purchase this device, it includes some extra features that are great for field trips. But, you don't need them. The other apps are great on their on.

I showed this one in a training at #LaJoyaISD recently. So, who wants to see the pyramids?

📵 Hangouts: Android Wear without the phone

#Hangouts is a great tool for communicating among educators. You can set groups, use SMS, and even make phonecalls (see https://goo.gl/DmA4JO).

#AndroidWear also has the Hangouts app. The best thing about it is that you don't need to connect it to your phone. All I have to do is connect my watch to the wifi, and I can use the Hangouts app with out having a device connected to it.

Here's an example. I was running errands. I remembered that I had to ask an Assistant Principal for the day off to attend a training. I didn't have my phone since I had forgotten it at home. Knowing where to find free wifi, I pulled up to a restaurant. I sent a text message using my watch.

At that moment, I'm glad I had my watch and Google Hangouts.

📥 Google Drive storage

A Brief History of Personal & Portable Storage.

Before USB Flash Drives, Floppy Disks used to dominate the market. It was so ubiquitous that the image of one of the latest iterations 💾 would represent Saving Files.

One of the problems was the capacity. In 1971, it went from 80KB (~ 80 thousand bytes) to 1.44MB (~ 1,440,000 bytes) in 1987. Though by today's standards that capacity was lacking, it was a great storage device at the moment, and this format lasted for years. Soon after, 2.88MB to 240MB disks were produced through 1999. But in 1999, rumors of a new contender started spread. And yet, we still used the 1.44MB floppy disk.

Another problem was the lifespan. From corrupt files during the save process to leaving the disk on your car's dashboard on a hot/sunny day, relying on a floppy disk to save your data was a gamble. Not to forget, that one could forget the disk somewhere.

After surviving the end of the world once again (the Y2K Bug), the USB Flash Drive came to the market. Since the commonly used floppy disk was only 1.44MB, the first 8MB "ThumbDrive" was a big change, but not comparable to the 240MB disks. The true change was noticeable when saving to the "ThumbDrive". It... was... faster. No doubt that this new technology would change how we save data.

On October 21, 2015, we had flying cars, hover skateboards, self lacing shoes, and USBs (for short) with the capacity of 1TB (~one trillion bytes) with transfer speeds of up to 1,250,000KB/s (compared to 125KB/s of a floppy disks). OK, maybe Marty McFly didn't go Back to the Future. But the transfer rates made an extremely large difference.

However, USBs suffered from similar problems as the floppy disk. USB could be forgotten, left on the car's dashboard (though more resistant now), and just simply stop working. However, there was a different contender rumored to exist since the days of the ARPANET. But the soon to be cloud, was just a puff of steam at the moment.

In 2005, the Box company launched an online file storage/sharing service. With the verge of cloud ☁ computing, online storage became more popular, but lacking in capacity. Until...

Google Drive (former Google Docs) is now offering a 16GB free service and up to 1TB or more of paid service.

It is now the present. USB Flash Drives are going the way of the Floppy Disks. Google Drive is personally the best cloud storage service there is. And just like the other two, there are faults to this.

Because it is a cloud service, it requires Internet access. It is readily available almost everywhere. The problem lies in the "almost". Internet is not exactly everywhere. Thus, USBs may not go out of style just yet. However, Internet availability is the only problem. The cost of Google Drive storage is very inexpensive and even free. If your school has Google Apps for Education, then you should have unlimited storage for free. Taking your files is as simple as login in through an Internet browser. Sharing your files is more secure than lending someone your USB Flash Drive. Plus, it has many other functions...

But that's for another time.

As a teacher, I don't always have access to the school's phone to contact parents. I don't want to use my personal number to give it to students or parents. A great solution is #GoogleVoice and #GoogleHangouts. With Google Voice, you will get a phone number that is associated with your number. With Google Hangouts, you will get to receive and make calls, and text, using the internet. That's it. If you have questions, post a comment here.

The #PureJetRedGold by #Vertu is an elegantly designed #Android phone. This $22k phone is a designe based of a jet airplane with red gold accents. On my teacher pay, I should be able to afford this by the time I retire...in 25 years if I start saving now $1k a year.

http://goo.gl is Google's URL Shortener service.

A website address, also known as URL (Uniform Resource Locator), tends to be long, especially when linking to academic articles. Click on this short link of a blue-winged pitta: https://goo.gl/0bA3ih
After you click on it, it will show you the full URL.

This is important when asking students, or parents, to visit a webpage. Asking the students to view the blue-winged pitta on their computers using the full URL will be very difficult if the URL is long like the previous example.

How have you used URL Shorteners in school?

Here's an #Android app for classroom management. #ClassDojo has been my wife's favorite for a while now. She teaches Elementary and enjoys the ability of collaborating with the team-teaching approach. One part of teaching is paperwork. One of the best parts of it is the behavior tracker. And, if you decide, parents can keep track of this.

Do you use this?

Need money for class projects? https://goo.gl/gUCN7D

Update: View these videos https://goo.gl/nxeeCm

As teachers we end up spending our own money to pay for class materials. When I did my taxes this year, I was told that I didn't qualify for the "Teacher Tax Credit". It's now back according to http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc458.html, but you never know for how long.

#GoogleDotOrg has funded my class on #DonorsChoose as shown here: http://goo.gl/fpcKrw
Through DonorsChoose teachers can request equipment for projects. DonorsChoose is a #501c3 (tax deductible non-profit) organization. Thus, asking businesses to help you is a benefit. The best time to ask is during November/December because of #IncomeTax and are also the months of giving.

If you are an #Educator and want to start a DonorsChoose project, first create an account on: http://goo.gl/HZLV3r
Then, create an account on: http://www.donorschoose.org/teachers but make sure you are using the same email as the #Amazon account.
Then, you or your students can create a project. Well, you create the project for your students, but it is student led. #ThinkItUp

Based on last week's post on #GoogleTranslate , I submitted this request: http://goo.gl/i8LHAZ
I realized that a better #Android camera provides better results. So, I asked for, http://goo.gl/Jaotiy which is the #Samsung #GalaxyCamera 2
